Dr. Marcus Schuetz
Adjunct Associate Professor
Former Head of Corporate Strategy, Volkswagen Group China

Dr. Marcus Schuetz has worked for over 25 years in the industry of research and academia. He is APS chair for Operations Strategy at The University of Malta, visiting Adjunct Professor at The University of Hong Kong and lecturer at Tilburg University, research advisor to B&L GmbH, and is an advisor and board member of various companies and institutions.

Until 2015 he was Head of Corporate Strategy of the Volkswagen Group China. He joined Volkswagen as an executive in 1999 in the German headquarter and conducted a turnaround initiative in Shanghai Volkswagen from 2003 to 2007. Dr. Schuetz split his time between corporate work and academia, and between 2007 and 2011 was, amongst others, Executive in Residence at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and Adjunct Professor at The University of Hong Kong. He also served as Assistant Dean for the EMBA Global Asia Programme in collaboration with London Business School and Columbia University, and as Academic Director for the Mannheim-Tongji EMBA in Shanghai.

Dr. Schuetz holds a PhD in Geosciences from Essen University and worked in the mining industry on projects during the collapse of the Soviet Union and in Africa. His Alma Mater is the University of Cologne. He further held management positions at The Boston Consulting Group, Robert Bosch and Arthur D. He also served in the German Armed Forces in encrypted communication and military intelligence in a unit operating MGM-52 Lance rockets for conventional and W70-3 nuclear warheads.

He enjoys photography and arts, is author of numerous articles, book chapters, and business cases and has received multiple awards for research and teaching. He was an invited lecturer to many universities and programmes, such as London Business School, New York University Stern, Columbia University, Copenhagen Business School, Oxford University, Fudan University, Tongji, Bond University, Mannheim University Business School, Moscow People’s Friendship University, Seoul National University, Kobe University and Dresden Technical University. In 2014 he had his first photography solo exhibition, “China’s Empty Quarters,” in 42 Fangjia Hutong, Xichen District, Beijing.

Dr. Schuetz has travelled all seven continents and is a lifetime fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. He does not play golf and has no iPhone.
