Martin Hermanowski
Class of 2013
Germany

When I finished my computer science studies at Technische Universität Darmstadt in 2007, I joined Accenture as an IT consultant. I worked on several assignments, including the coordination of retention requirements at an international high-tech company facing an investigation by the SEC, before specialising in core banking. I was part of the largest post-merger integration of universal banks in Germany. My role included the migration of millions of customer accounts and management of the migration’s technical execution. As part of the assignment, I was sent to Accenture’s delivery centre in Manila to provide management support and oversee the set-up of software development processes between Germany and the Philippines. That was my first visit to Asia.

As my interest in Asia grew, I went to Beijing and Shanghai to study Mandarin. Impressed by the pace of development and the culture, I decided that I should pursue my MBA studies in Asia, and work in the region for at least a few years to deepen my experience and knowledge.

My first visit to Hong Kong was in January 2010 on a weekend trip from Manila, and I was instantly attracted to the mix of cultures from the West and Asia. I selected HKU for its China immersion programme, the multitude of electives covering the Asia region and the possibility of going to Fudan University for the second part of my MBA.

The first month in Beijing was an intense introduction to Chinese culture, particularly for those who had not been to China before. I improved my Mandarin skills and enjoyed getting to know my classmates before class (and the stress) began.
